Chemical compounds called purines come from foods, and from the body itself. Purines are in turn broken down into uric acid. Gout and other issues can be the result of high uric acid levels in the body.
Most purines are made by the body, but some come from foods. Consuming foods containing high levels of purines may escalate uric acid levels in the body.
High purine foods are listed below:
- Liver, kidneys, and other organ meats, sweetbreads, and brains.
- Bacon, beef, pork, and lamb.
- Game meats.
- Larger quantities of other meats.
